The Harwood Museum of Art brings Taos arts to the world and world arts to Taos
The Harwood Museum showcases a diverse tapestry of over 100 years of art in Taos. We enhance learning, creativity, and cultural life for the Taos community by enabling the power of arts to honor the past and inspire the future.

The Harwood Museum of Art is one of the best kept secrets in the Southwest. Founded in 1923 in Taos, New Mexico, the museum’s collections and exhibitions tell a comprehensive story of art in Taos and Northern New Mexico. You will explore notable art from contemporary to traditional in a John Gaw Meem historic building.
The Harwood Museum of Art’s impressive permanent collection also includes the world renowned Agnes Martin Gallery, often compared to the Rothko Chapel. This installation of seven paintings, the only one of its kind in the world, was gifted to the Harwood by abstract expressionist painter Agnes Martin who called Taos her home.
In the 1940s-1950s Taos became one of the centers of modernist artistic activity in the United States. The Harwood’s extensive Taos Moderns and mid 20th century collection includes Andrew Dasburg, Marsden Hartley, Louis Ribak, Clay Spohn, Emil Bisttram, Dorothy Eugenie Brett, Edward Corbett and many more.
The Harwood Museum also features a significant collection of early 20th century artists including the Taos Society of Artists. See famous works by Victor Higgins, E. Martin Hennings, Joseph Henry Sharp, Ernest L. Blumenschein, E.I. Couse and others.
Our Native American collection includes original art by notable indigenous artists like John Suazo, Tony Abeyta, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, Juan Tafiho Mirabal, Julian Martinez, Dwayne Wilcox and others.
Our Hispanic Traditions collection has a number of historic santos, bultos, retablos, and crosses including art by Jose Rafael Aragon. The Harwood Museum has the largest collection of santero artists Patrociño Barela and Gustavo Victor Goler.
Join us for insightful lectures and special artist presentations in our 95-seat Arthur Bell Auditorium. We open our doors and share a variety of special events and art exhibition receptions throughout the year.

Harwood Museum of Art invites you to a fundraising dinner at the intersection of art, land, and shared ritual. Earth to Table brings together the artists, curators, and supporters of Unearthing Futures / Desenterrando Futuros for an intimate, one-night-only feast held at the historic la Hacienda de los Martinez, curated by /shed and led by artist-chef Johnny Ortiz-Concha.
Unearthing Futures / Desenterrando Futuros exhibition explores contemporary earthen artworks and the enduring relationships between people, land, and unfired earth–bridging regional traditions and global perspectives through the work of rafa esparza, Christine Howard Sandoval, Ronald Rael, Santino Gonzales, Joanna Keane Lopez, and Gabriel Chaile.
The evening will unfold around a beautifully curated, locally sourced feast by /shed, inspired by the high desert landscape of Taos and Johnny Ortiz-Concha’s Tu-ah-ta (Taos Pueblo) and Spanish heritage. Johnny will share reflections on his practice and the land, culture, and community at the heart of the /shed experience, with live music by Sarah Martinez throughout the evening. With only 40 tickets available, reserve your place not to be part of this extraordinary experience.
Held at ls Hacienda de los Martinez–one of the few remaining late Spanish Colonial “Great Houses” in the Southwest and on the National Register of Historic Places – the evening is rooted in a place whose adobe walls and history echo the exhibition’s themes of land, culture, and continuity.
Ticket Includes:
2:00 pm VIP exhibition preview, Harwood Museum of Art
5:30 pm gathering, Martinez Hacienda
6:30 pm feast, Martinez Hacienda

Unearthing Futures / Desenterrando Futuros explores contemporary earthen artworks, establishing a profound dialogue between regional roots and global perspectives. As visitors engage with the exhibition, they embark on a journey through time, examining the intricate relationship between humanity and the elemental material of unfired earth.
At its core, this exhibition highlights the transformative power of mud—a substance that bridges tradition and innovation, ecology and artistry. Through the work of rafa esparza, Christine Howard Sandoval, Ronald Rael, Santino Gonzales, Joanna Keane Lopez, and Gabriel Chaile, Unearthing Futures navigates the intersections of technological progress, societal change, and environmental stewardship. Each artwork invites reflection on a rapidly evolving world, encouraging viewers to consider the past, engage with the present, and imagine futures shaped by deeper connections to the land.
Situated within the striking landscapes of Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado, Unearthing Futures extends beyond the Harwood Museum’s galleries, incorporating historic and contemporary earthen building sites throughout the region. These sites and their histories become integral to the exhibition, emphasizing the enduring interplay between art, architecture, and environment.
The legacy of adobe and earthen clay in the Southwest is deeply rooted in Indigenous traditions and enriched by successive cultural influences. From Pueblo communities to Spanish settlers, adobe architecture embodies resilience, adaptation, and collaboration. Unearthing Futures reflects on this legacy, challenging audiences to reconsider their relationship to the land and its materials while engaging with contemporary reinterpretations of these practices.

Guitarist and composer Gustavo Alonso López presents an intimate evening of live Flamenco guitar in celebration of his third full-length studio album, Sonanta Con Metales. For this performance, Gustavo will reimagine works from each of his three albums for solo guitar.
About Sonanta Con Metales
Released in Spring of 2026 and created in collaboration with trumpeter Jay Roulston, Lopez’s newest record showcases Flamenco guitar in the context of a brass ensemble. Firmly grounded in the tradition and heritage of Spanish Flamenco, Sonanta Con Metales is also rooted in the lands of the American West. It was composed while Gustavo served as an Artist-In-Residence in Taos at the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation and draws on influences ranging from Flamenco to Jazz, film music, and Minimalism.
About the Artist
Gustavo Alonso López is a North American Flamenco guitarist and composer based in Walla Walla, WA. Born and raised in Idaho as the son of a Salvadoran immigrant, his music emerges from Flamenco’s grassroots oral tradition and the institutionalized Western notation system, borrows concepts from classical music and jazz, and blurs lines between composition and improvisation. Dismantling stereotypes and building cross-cultural dialogue and understanding through music are key elements of Gustavo’s creative practice. He has released three full-length studio albums, Punto Lejano (2014), Espasón (2023), and Sonanta Con Metales (2026). His work has received support from the Fulbright US Student Program, ArtWalla, The Helene Wurlitzer Foundation, Artist Trust, Audiosocket, and the Ucross Foundation. He also serves as a Studio Music Instructor in Guitar at Whitman College.

About the site:
The village of Los Ancones is named for the natural cove formed by the Rio Vallecitos as it winds through the mountains of Kit Carson National
Forest in the Cañada de La Madera. Once a thrivingfarming village with homes, religious buildings and a school, Los Ancones is now comprised of a few small 19th century adobe structures, including a rare, functioning religious building called a Morada, a cemetery, an abundant acequia, which provides water to the lush vega, and the property represents some of the best remaining examples of a traditional Northern New Mexican cultural landscape.
