Gallery: George E. Foster, Jr. Gallery of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs
Works on Paper: Roger Guillemin, opens June 28, with a reception for the artist on Friday, July 15th from 5:00 7:00 pm. The show continues through September 11th in the George E Foster, Jr. Gallery for Prints, Drawings and Photography. The artwork of Nobel laureate Dr. Roger Guillemin will be featured in this exhibition is derived from no single source of inspiration, but is the result of his musings in Photoshop, Painter, and other pixel-based art programs. Guillemin always refers to his works as mental images that simply occur to him when he creates. Until printed, these images exist just in the digital realm without manifestation beyond the computer screen. He has worked in this medium since the early 1990s. Dr. Guillemin says about his work: We scientists and I am fundamentally and traditionally a scientist will talk of a beautiful hypothesis, a beautiful result, an elegant demonstration. My laboratories since the early 60s were always well equipped in computers for our work on statistical analyses of our results in experimental medicine, biology, and modeling of biological phenomena. In 1977, Dr. Guillemin was awarded the Nobel Prize in physiology and medicine for his discoveries in neuro-endrocrinology. His work led the way for research on the brains control of body chemistry, and he was among the first to isolate the hormone group endorphins. Born in France, Dr. Guillemin is a distinguished professor at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California where he lives most of the year. He has also maintained a home in Truchas, New Mexico for over forty years.
