Mike Vargas: Santos on Paper

Gallery: George E. Foster, Jr. Gallery of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs
The Harwood Museum of Art presents Mike Vargas: Santos on Paper organized by guest curator Olga Torres-Reid. The exhibition opens Friday, June 2nd and will be on view through September 10th, 2006. This exhibition features mixed media religious drawings including such iconic images as the Virgin of Guadalupe, Saint Francis, and the Rostro Divino. Each image, while rooted in the traditions of the classic Santeros of the 19th century, has been reinterpreted through Vargas masterful understanding of graphic line and unique composition. Mike Vargas: Santos on Paper is the first major solo museum exhibition for the artist. His work has been shown throughout New Mexico, including regular exhibitions in Taos. In 1996, Vargas received his BFA from New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas. While in school, Vargas spent time researching the art of the Santeros. He had been familiar with the images growing up, however, through the formal study of the Classic Santeros and their methods he became obsessed with the subject. Over the past ten years, the artist has also finely honed his printmaking skills, beginning with an invitation to apprentice with master printmakers Alvin Harvey and Michael Vigil at Graphic Impressions. Today Vargas has his own studio / gallery, M Vargas Fine Art located in the heart of Taos on Paseo del Pueblo Sur, where he works tirelessly at his art, from paintings and drawings to prints and mixed media works. He is also represented in Santa Fe by Alexandra Stevens Gallery. A gallery talk with Mike Vargas is scheduled for Thursday June 22nd at 7pm.
